WHY A VERTICAL MACHINE IS NOT THE WAY TO GO The Super LOG HOG does not go vertical. Why? Because vertical log splitters push the wedge thru the wood instead of the wood into the wedge. Why is this a big deal? With a vertical log splitter the split pieces fall to your feet and more times than not the wedge gets stuck in the wood -The wedge must retract so that the log stripper can strip the stuck log off the wedge. That takes 2 strokes per split making the operation twice as slow!! The Super LOG HOG pushes the log into the wedge. Then the split log falls off the end of the machine out of the operators way. What works real nice- Let the split pieces pile at the end of the machine...then simply move the machine over a few feet and start a new pile creating 3 foot high wind rows. The valve detent lock retracts the cylinder automatically while the operator grabs another log. No waiting for stuck logs. And for those large logs.. The Super LOG HOG can drop very low to the ground by simply raising the front leg. Also it is my belief that a horizontal log splitter is much better on your back. It is better to pick up a log and lock your back than it is to be bent over and move heavy logs sideways. After a hour of bending over it becomes quite evident that chiropractors love vertical splitters . Most firewood grapple loads consist of 12"-16" diameter logs -which is easy enough to handle by most operators - for the occasional larger log-just cut it shorter so that it weighs less- make kindling from the shorts I designed a nice vertical machine and intended on selling the plans for it as well. It did what any other vertical machine would do and more. But it was so slow, even with a 22 gpm pump and 13hp. The split logs fell to my feet. The logs got stuck on the wedge. Though a very nice design it was typical of the operation of a vertical splitter, something I couldn't put my name on and feel good about . So I dropped the project.
